SAIGA announces an appointment of new CEO

The Southern African Institute of Government Auditors (SAIGA) is delighted to announce the appointment of Mathithela Russel Morena as the Institute’s new Chief Executive Officer. Mr Morena’s tenure as the new CEO is effective from the 1st of July 2020. As CEO he will account to the Council of SAIGA and be responsible for SAIGA’s consistent achievement of its mission.

The appointment of Mr Morena will usher in a new era for the Institute. Already, as Acting CEO of the Institute, he has been actively involved in transforming SAIGA to be one of the leading public sector auditing and accountancy professional bodies. To adapt to the changing nature of business since the announcement of National State of Disaster due to the COVID-19 Pandemic, Mr Morena has ensured that business continues as usual by bringing in innovative solutions to ensure SAIGA`s sustainability and strengthen the confidence of members and stakeholders. During his tenure as Acting CEO, stakeholder relations were established with different partners and professional institutions with the aim of building stakeholder relations that will in future be expanded into the rest of Africa.  

Mr Morena joined SAIGA in August 2019 as an Education Training and Development Manager. Prior to the mentioned position, Mr Morena worked at the Institute of Internal Auditors South Africa (IIASA) responsible for the Management of Development and Assessments. He has acquired solid managerial experience in various fields; including training and development, human resource, skills development, retail operations and contact centre.

A Chartered Human Resource Professional (CHRP), Mr Morena is highly equipped with knowledge from different fields of study. He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) that he obtained in 2018 and various other tertiary qualifications. Mr Morena has diverse working experience in multiple industries, namely education, professional bodies, media and retail. He brings a fresh mind that will strengthen the Institute’s effectiveness and efficiency in advancing public sector accountancy and auditing.

With his appointment as CEO Mr Morena stated that he is honoured to be appointed as CEO of SAIGA and value the decision made by EXCO and Council of SAIGA to allow him to lead this organisation. “We have made a significant transformation in the last ten months since I started acting in this crucial role. Indeed, that is just the beginning as more is to come to uplift the vision of SAIGA till its full recognition as the preferred professional body in Public Sector Auditing and Accounting, in South Africa and Africa.

“We have an excellent team of employees, committee experts and Council members whom I believe will provide me with ample support in fulfilling SAIGA’s strategy. There is a big journey ahead”.
